In a significant cultural milestone, AngloGold Ashanti has returned a treasured collection of historic Ashanti artifacts to the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. This act symbolizes a deep respect for Ashanti heritage and a commitment to preserving the cultural legacy of the Ashanti Kingdom.

A Celebration of Collaboration

Speaking at the ceremonial event, Stewart Bailey, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Director of AngloGold Ashanti, highlighted the profound importance of this gesture. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, for his visionary leadership, as well as to the dignitaries present, including Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan and esteemed Ghanaian leaders.

Bailey emphasized the collaborative effort behind this initiative, describing it as a testament to the power of unity in achieving cultural preservation.

Bailey invoked the South African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,” to illustrate the teamwork that made the repatriation possible. He acknowledged the leadership of the Asantehene, the expertise of AngloGold Ashanti, and the dedication of cultural stewards such as Mr. Kwasi Adu-Gyamfi Osei, curator of the regalia, in bringing the artifacts back to their rightful home.

“These artifacts are not mere objects; they are priceless representations of the Ashanti people’s artistry, skill, and history,” Bailey noted.

Tracing the Artifacts’ Journey

The artifacts, including intricate gold regalia and traditional items, were originally acquired in 2000 by AngloGold’s predecessor after being held in Europe for years. For decades, they were displayed in a Cape Town museum, allowing Africans to connect with their shared history.

Bailey praised earlier AngloGold management for ensuring the artifacts stayed on the continent and expressed his pride in facilitating their final return to Kumasi, their birthplace.

“This homecoming is both a symbolic and deeply emotional moment,” he said, highlighting the enduring link between Ashanti craftsmanship and gold mining traditions.

“This return is not only a cultural celebration but also a reinforcement of our support for the Ashanti people,” Bailey stated. “It signifies a renewed partnership built on respect and shared heritage.”

He also commended the pivotal role of Mr. Osei in ensuring the success of the project, noting that these artifacts now serve as an accessible and inspiring symbol of heritage for the Ashanti people and all Ghanaians.

A Memorable Homecoming

The unveiling of the artifacts at the Manhyia Palace was met with admiration and applause. Dignitaries and traditional leaders marveled at the craftsmanship and intricate designs, reflecting the Ashanti people’s artistry and their deep historical connection to gold.
