PRINCOF Urges CETAG to End Strike Following Government’s Intervention
The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has called on the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to suspend its strike action and resume work by Wednesday, August 7, 2024. This appeal comes in light of the government’s recent commitment to address CETAG’s conditions of service.
Since June 14, CETAG members from all 46 Colleges of Education across Ghana have been on strike, protesting the government’s initial refusal to implement an arbitral award and their conditions of service. Despite the ongoing strike, the government has now reached an agreement with CETAG, leading PRINCOF to request that the strike be called off.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 5, 2024, PRINCOF highlighted that the government has begun to implement CETAG’s demands. This includes the payment of the Book and Research Top-Up Allowance, processing of the All-Year-Round Allowance, and the migration of staff to the universities’ salary structure.
PRINCOF emphasized that continuing the strike will further disrupt the academic calendar and urged CETAG to return to work to facilitate a resolution. The statement read:
“While PRINCOF acknowledges and appreciates the concerns of your members regarding the delayed implementation of the arbitration awards by the National Labour Commission (NLC)—specifically on the migration of staff to the university payroll structure, the payment of the All-Year-Round Allowance for 2022, and the Book and Research Top-Up Allowances—we believe that resuming lectures will help expedite the resolution of these issues.
“We base this appeal on the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, which outlines a clear roadmap for implementing the NLC’s arbitral awards that were the cause of the CETAG strike. The concrete steps taken by the government demonstrate its commitment to addressing your concerns. In turn, CETAG should show its commitment to the MoA by returning to the classroom. Prolonging the strike will only lead to further disruption of the academic calendar, impacting academic progress.”
